Unique Underwater Hotels: Hydropolis, Jules Undersea Lodge And Poseidon Resort

There are many types of vacations to choose from, but seldom does the nature of a mere hotel enter these calculations. However, this could change in the very near future with the development of resorts and hotels that offer five-star service in a new and unique locale: the ocean. Poseidon Resorts and Hydropolis are racing to provide the first completely underwater hotel resorts, thus joining the ranks of other completely unique hotels in the world.

The concept of running an underwater hotel is not an entirely new one. Jules' Undersea Lode is an underwater hotel located in Key Largo of the Florida Keys. Originally a scientific research platform, the structure has been converted to an overnight bed & breakfast-like facility. To get to the underwater hotel, guests must scuba dive 21 feet below the surface of the sea and emerge in Jules' Undersea Lodge's wet room, wherein the water is drained and guest are transfered to the dry rooms of the lodge. For those who do not know how to scuba dive, the underwater hotel provides several packages of various diving classes. Depending on the guest's preference, they can be certified to simply scuba dive to the entrance of the underwater hotel or become a fully certified recreational scuba diver.

The accommodations are sparse, with Jules' Undersea Lodge sporting merely two bedrooms with a double bed and a multi-purpose common area with a refrigerator, microwave, television, DVD player, telephone, and a sofa that converts into two single size beds. The underwater hotel's kitchen is fully-stocked, and some packages have a gourmet chef diving down in the evening to cook a gourmet mean for guests. The price range of packages run from $345/person per night to $445/person per night, which includes the gourmet chef for the underwater hotel.

In the near future, however, this small scale of underwater hotels will change enormously with the advent of the world's first major entirely underwater hotels. Poseidon Resorts and Hydropolis are the two major facilities currently in the running to becoming the world's first undersea resort.

Poseidon Resorts will be located off the coast of Fiji, though the exact location is being kept secret. What is no secret is the activities and amenities that Poseidon Resorts plans to offer to their guests. Activities include learning to pilot deep-sea submersibles, sea-floor walks, and para-sailing. If guests prefer a more relaxing set of events, the resort will have a bar, library, fully-equipped spa and gym, and even a theater and golf course. It has even been mentioned that they plan to institute a wedding package, allowing guests to be married beneath the waves within the halls of the underwater hotel. For those who do not relish a completely sub-marine stay, Poseidon Resorts will provide land-side accommodations. However, for those who do desire the underwater experience, the cost of a seven day, six night stay will run $15,000, and will subsist of two nights in the underwater resort and four in one of the land-side bungalows.

The second forerunner in the race to become the world's first five-star underwater hotel is Hydropolis, which will be constructed off the coast of Dubai. The hotel will consist of three parts: the land station, the tunnel, and the underwater hotel. The land station is where guests are greeted and arrangements made for transportation of luggage to their suites. The guests then board a train that travels through the tunnel and deposits them in the underwater hotel. It is designed to resemble a circular atoll, with the inside curves housing the central parts of the hotel, such as the facility's 220 suites, the theater, museum, cosmetic surgery clinic, and marine institute. In addition to these amenities within the underwater hotel, activities such as snorkeling, diving, and simple beach trips will be available for guests.

As the future draws ever near, these underwater hotels with their marvelous architecture and beautiful environments will potentially become prime vacationing spots offering a new and unique view into our world's aquatic life. If this sounds exciting, be prepared: both Poseidon Resorts and Hydropolis underwater hotels plan to open up for reservations in 2008, and to begin operations in 2009.
