According to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA) 2007-2008 National Pet Owners Survey, 63 percent of U.S. households, or 71.1 million homes, own a pet. Approximately 88.3 million cats and 74.8 million dogs are owned in the U.S. households today. Along with the joys of pet ownership, the costs of pet ownership are increasing as well. In 2006, $38.5 billion was spent on pets in the U.S. of which grooming and boarding totaled $2.7 billion. Three largest basic annual expenses for dog and cat owners were surgical vet visits, food, and kennel boarding.

There are plenty of kennels ready to take care of pets while their owners are away, but being boarded in a kennel is stressful for both pets and their owners. Being away from their familiar surroundings and among unfamiliar canines produces high anxiety for many dogs, and many owners are looking for different options to boarding, such as pet sitters and pet friendly hotels.

Those pet owners who do not wish to separate any of the family members from one another, will turn to pet friendly hotels for their business. More hotels across the country are becoming known as pet friendly hotels, and several chains and hotel franchises, such as Best Western, Comfort Suites and Comfort Inn, and Days Inn hotels, have adopted new pet-friendly policies. Pet friendly hotels cater to the four-legged family members with plush pet beds, freshly baked dog biscuits, or complimentary frisbees. Other pet friendly hotels offer canine check-in gift packages that include a pet toy, ID tag, bone, and turn down treat with a bowl of Evian water.

Of the 4,100 hotels in the Best Western hotel chain, more than 1,900 are pet friendly hotels in 47 different states. Comfort Inn and Comfort Suites of Choice Hotels have over 2,500 pet friendly hotels in 46 states of their 5,000 hotels world-wide. Days Inn, a franchise of Wyndham Hotel Group, also features pet friendly hotels, policies varying from one hotel to another. There might be an additional charge depending on the hotel, and some hotels might set restrictions that limit the number or size of dogs allowed. When making reservations, it is always good practice to call the individual hotel beforehand to find out what their pet friendly policies are. It is also good to remember that anytime people travel to another state with their dog or cat , they need to have a health certificate from the veterinarian, also called a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection. Requirements vary from state to state, and detailed information can be found on the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services website.

Pet friendly hotels know the importance of their four-legged guests and have ample information readily available about local services, such as veterinarians, dog walkers, and grooming services. Some pet friendly hotels, such as the Hotel Burnham in Chicago, even have a licensed dog masseuse on staff. And for those traveling without a pet, Hotel Monaco in San Francisco offers a complimentary companion goldfish.

The options are endless for pet friendly hotels. As more people are becoming pet owners and loathe to part with their furry family members even for a short vacation, pet friendly hotels see an increase in customer sales. When pet owners have to choose between otherwise equal hotels, there is no question that they will choose pet friendly hotels.
